New robotic technology takes roofing firm to new heights

GBS Roofing has invested in new robotic technology that will help businesses to extend the life of photovoltaic panels and increase solar energy yields.

GBS Roofing is renowned as a specialist flat roofing contractor with large scale industrial and bespoke domestic projects delivered across Northern Ireland, Great Britain and Europe.

The Solar Clean system acquired by GBS Roofing uses a series of remotely operated mechanical brushes and fibres to remove debris build-up and maximise the efficiency of solar panels, whilst preventing damage to the roof itself. Effective cleaning can increase output, with recent research in the US showing increases of up to 30 percent in certain climates and locations.

GBS Roofing does not install solar panels but frequently works on new or existing flat roofing projects where solar panels are installed. The company also undertakes regular roof inspections, surveys and maintenance, making solar panel cleaning a perfect addition to their services.

The cost effectiveness of solar energy for businesses is well documented, with most installations returning the original investment cost within 4-5 years. Data has shown that debris, including dust, rain residue, bird droppings, pollen, algae and lichen, can significantly reduce solar output.

Barry Mairs, Managing Director, GBS Roofing, said: “Although GBS Roofing does not install solar energy systems, we have installed a number of commercial or industrial flat roofs where solar panels have been added as part of the original design or retrofitted.

“From a distance, solar panels can look clean but closer inspection can show layers of accumulated dirt due to environmental and geographical factors. When carrying out routine roof inspections, surveys and maintenance, we felt it would be helpful for clients if we noted the condition of any solar panels as roofs are not typically accessible to building owners.

“Clients have then looked at their solar production data and many have seen a reduction in output that correlates with the gradual build-up of grime on the panels. It felt like a logical step for GBS Roofing to invest in the solar cleaning technology so we could offer this additional service as part of our roof maintenance programs.”

McKeown Fine Foods in Rasharkin recently completed a significant photovoltaic installation across all warehouses and cold stores. They contracted GBS Roofing to use the new solar cleaning technology after a routine roof inspection showed a residue build up on the solar panels.

“The benefits of solar energy for cost saving in business are clear, particularly for the competitive food production and manufacturing sector, where energy usage is high and costs are rising. If a company is going to invest in solar panels, it is vital that they are cleaned and maintained regularly to maximise the return on investment. I was greatly impressed by the effectiveness of the Solar Clean system used by GBS Roofing at our facility and the positive impact on solar yield. We now plan to avail of the service annually,” said Mr McKeown.
